Biography
Prof. Erica Palmerini is Associate Professor of Private Law at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy. Scientific coordinator of the EU RoboLaw project (G.A. n. 289092). Her main research interests are law and technology, bioethics, tort law, and medical law. Author of the book Informazione genetica e tutela della persona. Implicazioni giuridiche delle analisi genetiche, Pisa, 2004. Contributor to several collective publications on bioethics, tort law, family law and privacy, among which the following are the most relevant to the research proposed: Bioetica e, in Diritto privato comunitario, a cura di P. Andrea Bertolini

Dr. Andrea Bertolini is a post-doctoral researcher in private law at the Scuola Superiore S. Anna di Studi Universitari e Perfezionamento (SSSA), in Pisa. Dr. Bertolini earned a Ph.D. in private law summa cum laude at SSSA, and a Master in Laws (LL.M.) from Yale Law School (CT-USA). Since 2013 Dr. Bertolini is Adjunct Professor in Private Law at the University of Pisa, Dipartimento di Economia e Management. His research interests range from contract law and torts, to capital markets and technology regulation, in a European and comparative perspective. Dr. Bertolini is an attorney licensed to practice in Italy and New York (NY-USA).



Niels Van Dijk

Biography
Niels van Dijk obtained a LL.M. in Dutch law at the Universiteit van Amsterdam in 2003 with a specialization in legal philosophy. Between 2003-2004 he further specialized in philosophy of the sciences at the Postgraduate School of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. In 2006 he obtained a M.A. in philosophy at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. He is currently a researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel where he prepares a Ph D. in the project "Law and Autonomic Computing. A mutual transformation process". His research deals with the conflictive encounter of new information technologies with legal regimes like data protection and intellectual rights.



Paolo Dario


Biography
Paolo Dario is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of The BioRobotics Institute of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA), Pisa, Italy. He received his Dr. Eng. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1977 and pursued postgraduate education with fellowships from the University of Pisa and from the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). He completed his graduate and postgraduate education and training as a research associate at Brown University, Providence, RI, and at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. Today, Paolo Dario is the Coordinator of the PhD Program in BioRobotics at SSSA, currently enrolling 92 PhD students. Since 1987 Paolo Dario teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on Biomedical Robotics at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, and Medical Robotics in the Course on Biomedical Engineering at the School of Engineering of the University of Pisa. In 1991 Paolo Dario started a new course in Mechatronics at the Schol of Engineering in Pisa, and he taught this course till 2000. Paolo Dario is Visiting Professor at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, and Tianjin University, China. He has been Visiting Professor and Researcher at Brown University, at the Collège de France and at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan, France, at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan, and at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland. He is Fellow of the University of Tokyo, Japan. Paolo Dario is the Founding Coordinator of the Center of Micro-BioRobotics@SSSA of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), and he is currently Senior Scientist of IIT. He has been and is the coordinator of more than 60 European projects, of more than 50 national projects, and of more than 50 industrial projects. Paolo Dario is the editor of two books on the subject of robotics, and the author of more than 500 scientific papers (250 on ISI journals). Paolo Dario is an IEEE Fellow, and he has served as President of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society in the years 2002-2003, as Co-Chair of the Technical Committees on Bio-robotics and of Robo-ethics of the same Society. Prof. Dario is a Fellow of the European Society on Medical and Biological Engineering, a member of the Board of the International Foundation of Robotics Research (IFRR), and he has also served as Vice-President of the International Society for Gerontechnology. Paolo Dario is a member of the International Scientific Committee of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), and a member of the International Scientific Committee of the Filarete Foundation in Milan, Italy, a business accelerator for the development of biotechnology research. Paolo Dario has served two terms (2008-2010) as Member of the ISTAG (IST Advisory Group) of the European Union. Since 2010 Paolo Dario is a Member of the Global Agenda Council on Robotics and Smart Devices of the World Economic Forum.
